Batu the Black Bodatom

The journey of Batu has been interesting in my eyes, because in the first three drafts of Rage, she was a male character. When I went back for the third draft, I realized I was missing an opportunity for a truly amazing female character. Batu comes from a life of privilege, worship, and fear. As the Black, in the internal battle between the Black and the Red, she feels that destiny has been forced upon her, and she does the best with what she has. She knows she has to fight the Red who is equally as powerful if not more so, and she knows that the battle will be to the death.

What I love about this character and what she becomes is she maintains a certain level of humbleness even when dealing with those much weaker than her because she knows the value of knowledge. A character flaw of hers that I am working out now is because she is so powerful and believes so much in the knowledge of others, at times she can come off a little gullible, and that's great because it's in the character flaws where we find the best conflict.
